Coal, Clay & Sand BUILT Ottawa & Starved Rock Country
The first coal deposits in North American are said to have been discovered in Ottawa in 1669 by French explorers. This short video tells of Starved Rock Country’s relationship to mining of clay, coal and sand. All three propelled Ottawa to economic success. Coal mining in our area has been gone since the 1920’s, Firproof Construction Companies (brick factories) have been gone since the 1940’s but sand remains and is going strong.
